St. Michael stands in Aufkirch, a rural part of Überlingen, on a hill above Lake Constance. Its tower overlooks Überlingen and the lake.

The Alemanni established the church during the region’s early Christian period, dedicating the site to Saint Michael. Earlier worship had taken place on elevated ground.

St. Michael served as Überlingen’s mother church until the fourteenth century, giving it a central place in local religious history. Regular weekly services no longer take place there.

An annual service and following Patrozinium celebration continue the church’s connection with the surrounding community. The renovated tower also carries a webcam showing the landscape from this elevated position.

Nearby paths lead through the hill country towards scenic viewpoints above Überlingen and Lake Constance. St. Michael combines religious heritage, rural setting and broad views within Überlingen’s landscape.
