# St. Johanngraben

St. Johanngraben lies in Überlingen, beside the old town and within the former fortifications on Lake Constance. A moat, walls, towers, gates, roads and bridges once formed a defensive ring around the city. The ditch separated the settlement from the surrounding countryside and made access to the walls harder for attackers.

The fortifications expanded between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries as the city grew and military technology changed. In the nineteenth century, declining defensive needs led to the removal or repurposing of many structures. The former moat now forms part of a green belt where paths, plants and wildlife occupy a space once shaped for defence.

Information boards explain the nearby towers, gates and moats as you walk through the landscape. The greenery provides habitats and helps cool the city during hot weather. Even in winter, the paths remain open, linking peaceful walks with Überlingen’s history as a fortified imperial city.
