# San Filippo Neri

In Italy, San Filippo Neri is a historic church shaped around a single nave. A vast barrel vault rises above it, with lunettes, elliptical chapels, fluted pilasters, and Corinthian capitals. Curved windows soften the light across the bright interior.

Construction began in 1675 on land donated by Charles Emmanuel II, following Antonio Bettino’s design. After siege damage brought down the dome and part of the roof, Filippo Juvarra reshaped the project from 1715. His design united nave and presbytery beneath the vault and through the sequence of side chapels. Michelangelo Garove designed the high altar, while Giuseppe Maria Talucchi completed the façade and sacristy in the nineteenth century.

The complex also holds an oratory, sacristy, crypt, convent, altarpieces, reliquaries, and the remains of Blessed Sebastiano Valfrè. Parametric three-dimensional studies have reconstructed the cloister’s geometry and details. Look up from the altar, and the vault’s continuous curve makes the whole interior feel connected.
