In Italy, Chiesa di Santa Cristina presents a layered stone façade like a theatrical backdrop across the square. Its two superimposed orders frame a central section that curves boldly towards you. A large oval window rises above an intricately worked portal, set slightly away from the axis. Columns, pilasters, saints and allegories fill the composition with Baroque movement.

The original plan dates to 1639 and is attributed to Carlo di Castellamonte. Construction formed part of the seventeenth-century urban expansion commissioned by Christine Maria, Madama Reale. Filippo Juvarra created the façade between 1715 and 1718, considered his first work in the city. The adjacent convent belonged to the Discalced Carmelites until its suppression in 1902. Nineteenth-century spoliations and wartime bombing altered parts of the building, while later work renewed the apse and covered the side façades with marble.

The high altar changed during the 1960s, when workers also reorganised the side chapels. The church now serves as an active parish and place of community. Small devotional frescoes on nearby façades connect the building with the square’s religious life. As you approach, watch sunlight slide across the curved centre beneath the oval window.
