Chiesa di San Rocco stands in Italy as the architectural result of a vow made during a devastating plague. A confraternity formed under Saint Roch, led by Giò Francesco Fossati, and helped abandoned sick people. Its members wore blue robes with hoods while serving those whom the epidemic had left without support. French forces demolished the first oratory to make way for new fortifications. Sant’Agostino then offered the confraternity temporary shelter in its rooms. The brothers later purchased land on Via Valobra for a permanent church. Francesco Lanfranchi designed the building, and construction continued through interruptions and material shortages. Salvaged bricks from demolished bastions helped builders complete the vaults. The ornate Baroque portal marked the church’s main completion, while interior decoration continued afterward. Lanfranchi’s original project remained essentially unchanged.

A broad Baroque façade faces the square and creates strong contrasts of light and shadow. The carved portal concentrates attention at the building’s entrance. A large dome rises above the roofs with an unusual, rounded mass. The adjacent campanile completes the silhouette beside it. Together, the façade, dome and bell tower shape a distinctive view across the town.
