Cappella della Sindone stands between Turin’s cathedral and the royal palace, forming a tall architectural chamber designed by Guarino Guarini. The pierced dome draws your gaze upward. Guarini began the work in 1667 and completed it in 1690, shaping stone around an ascent from darkness towards divine light. Wheelchair access makes the chapel available to visitors with mobility needs.

For centuries, the chamber protected the Shroud and connected palace and cathedral entrances for rulers and worshippers. A fallen marble fragment caused closure in 1990. Fire struck during restoration in 1997, cracking and discolouring marble while the main structure and dome survived. Fire crews rescued the relic, which is now stored elsewhere.

Long conservation work followed before reopening in 2018 as part of the Musei Reali, with entry from the palace side. Look closely at the stone, then follow the dome’s upward passage from shadow into light.
