# Basilica Mauriziana

Basilica Mauriziana rises in Italy with a neoclassical façade of Corinthian columns and a triangular pediment. Carlo Bernardo Mosca added this stone front in 1836, while Silvestro Simonetta and Giovanni Albertoni created its sculpted figures.

A church stood here by the twelfth century, later dedicated to Saint Paul, before Antonio Bettino rebuilt it at the end of the seventeenth century. The dome, begun during that reconstruction and completed in the nineteenth century, reaches roughly forty metres and receives daylight through eight drum windows. Paolo Emilio and Rodolfo Morgari painted the dome’s Triumph of the Cross in 1858 and 1859, while Francesco Gonin supplied figures of Saints Maurice and Lazarus and the blessed Amedeo and Umberto.

The Maurizian hospital stands beside the church, and an antique crypt beneath the floor holds generations of burials. Conservation work has recovered colour and detail in the mural, making the meeting of paint, stone and light visible again.
