Katholische Kirche St. Paulus stands in Germany’s growing northern district, with a sharp, pyramid-like silhouette and steep, down-swept roofs. Werner Hahn designed the church after winning an architectural competition in the early 1970s. Dark panels partly cover its robust concrete walls, creating a stark exterior that prepares you for the spacious interior.

Inside, exposed concrete meets a crafted wooden ceiling, while the altar, ambo and holy water font use pale limestone carved by Franz Bucher. Willi Bucher later added the baptismal font in 2013, giving the sanctuary another link to the family’s work. A suspended organ draws your gaze upward, and the absence of a gallery keeps the congregation together at ground level. Interior changes improved the atmosphere and acoustics, while the adjacent parish centre provides youth rooms and meeting spaces.

Wheelchair access makes the church easier to enter, and parish life extends beyond worship into regular community gatherings. The detail that lingers longest may be the organ, appearing to hang beneath the ceiling above the open floor.
