Opprinelse (del I) meets you at the entrance of a Norwegian fishery college with larvikite rising through floor and glass. Some blocks remain rough, while others carry a mirror polish. Walk around the stones and their upward movement seems geological, slow, and deliberate.

Hagbart Solløs won a closed competition, and the ensemble entered the building in 1995 as work made for its architecture. The grand staircase forms part of it. A winding band of blue tiles runs inward like a brook, linking the threshold with marine images of seabeds, bird cliffs, and breakers. Related wall reliefs extend that vocabulary inside.

At the centre, a slim polished form pierces coarser stone, giving the heavy arrangement the sudden profile of a fish tail. Light can make the surface flash like a fin. Students who study the sea encounter that movement beside the entrance, where stone, glass, and blue tile share one setting. That gleaming fin is the detail that stays.
