Villa d'Este stands in Tivoli, near Rome, as a sixteenth-century Renaissance villa surrounded by terraced gardens. Its creation began under Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este.

The hillside terraces hold fountains, pools, jets, and cascades supplied by water diverted from the Aniene River. Gravity drives the water through the gardens. Pirro Ligorio designed the layout, while artists led by Girolamo Muziano and Federico Zuccari decorated the interiors with biblical and mythological frescoes. Its artistic decoration reflects the Este family's patronage.

After Ippolito's death, Cardinal Luigi continued work on the gardens, before the property changed hands and fell into disrepair. Cardinal Gustav von Hohenlohe restored it in the nineteenth century. The complex serves as an Italian state museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gravity carries Aniene River water through pools, jets, and cascades across the terraces.
