Riserva Naturale Monte Catillo spreads across the hills of Tivoli, in Italy’s province of Rome, beside the urban landscape. Monte Catillo rises as the reserve’s highest point. A cross marks the summit, making it an unmistakable landmark above the surrounding paths and countryside. Well-marked trails lead through the protected area.

Grasslands, shrublands and forests meet here in an ecotonal setting where Eastern and Western plant communities overlap. Cork oak woodland shelters rare specimens of Quercus crenata. Cooler, wetter northern slopes hold ancient Turkey oak forests, oriental hornbeam, wild hawthorn, chestnut and aspen. Storax and Judas trees add Eastern Balkan species beside plants with an Atlantic character.

Wild boar, foxes, hares, badgers, porcupines and dormice inhabit the reserve, while kestrels, buzzards and owls circle above. Blackcaps and great tits move through the woodland. From the trails, you can look across the Roman countryside and the Apennines toward the waterfalls of the Aniene River. A picnic area near Fonte Bologna offers a quiet place to pause among the trees.
