Palatul Culturii stands in Timișoara beside Piața Victoriei, its façade facing the square through a triumphal arch. Four cultural institutions share its roof: the Romanian National Opera, Mihai Eminescu National Theatre, Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre, and German State Theatre. Performances in Romanian, Hungarian, and German connect these institutions with the city’s cultural life.

Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer designed the building, constructed between 1872 and 1875 in an eclectic historicist style. Its original Renaissance appearance changed after fires in 1882 and 1920, when only the side wings survived. Duiliu Marcu then reshaped the façade and main hall in a Neo-Byzantine style. During the 1930s, the premises also housed the Banat Museum, Academy of Fine Arts, and Banat-Crișana Social Institute.

In October 1918, an assembly here supported the union of Banat with Romania. During the December 1989 Revolution, people gathered on the balcony facing the square and declared Timișoara Romania’s first city free from communism. That balcony, sometimes called the Balcony of the Revolution, remains the most vivid detail above Piața Victoriei.
