Lupoaica stands in Timișoara as a bronze statue of a she-wolf nursing the twins Romulus and Remus. The figures recall the legend of Rome’s founding, while the setting links Timișoara with Roman heritage and Romanian identity.

Installed on 23 April 1926, the statue came from the Italian state as a replica of Rome’s Lupa Capitolina. Italy gave similar sculptures to several Romanian cities between 1906 and 1926, making this the last of those gifts. A 4.5-metre pedestal carried it through an unveiling attended by about 10,000 people, despite protests connected with Mussolini’s Italy. The statue later left the city centre, entered the Banat Museum after the communist takeover, and returned around 1969 or 1970.

The monument still carries traces of that turbulent history: in 1998, someone climbed onto it during the inauguration of a nearby monument. Its bronze wolf and two children remain a familiar part of Timișoara’s cityscape.
