Odessa preserves the wartime history of a Black Sea port city shaped by siege, evacuation, and underground resistance. During World War II, Romanian forces allied with Germany attacked the city in August 1941. Soviet troops and civilians defended it for more than two months before evacuation by sea on 16 October.

Partisan groups continued fighting from a network of catacombs beneath the city after the evacuation. Those tunnels provided shelter and concealed routes for attacks against occupying forces. The defence earned Odessa recognition as a Hero City in 1965, alongside the Order of Lenin, the Gold Star medal, and a commemorative monument. One detail remains especially striking: about 15,000 civilians left by sea with the remaining Soviet troops, while resistance continued underground.
