The Evangelical Lutheran Church stands in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, as the city’s only Lutheran church. Old trees surround its brown-yellow brick walls. Pointed arches and the building’s upright shape reveal the neo-Gothic design by Alexei Leontyevich Benois. The Baltic character appears in the brickwork. Built in 1899 by Tashkent’s Lutheran community, it reflects a German presence rooted in nineteenth-century service in the armies of imperial Russia.

Under Soviet rule, the church became a warehouse. By the late 1970s, the Tashkent Conservatory had received the building, restored its interior, and installed an organ for its opera studio. The Lutheran community reclaimed it after independence. Services use German and Russian, while the modest interior centres on an altar, crucifix, sacred lamp, candles, and restrained images of Christ and the apostles.

Sunlight enters through the coloured stained glass. On Sundays, German hymns and organ music travel beyond the trees, leaving a clear link between the congregation’s history and this building.
