Theodor-Heuss-Haus stands on Stuttgart’s Killesberg as the former home of Theodor Heuss, Germany’s first Federal President. This bungalow became his final residence after his second presidential term. He lived here from 1959 until his death in 1963, surrounded by rooms shaped by 1950s domestic life.

The house opened as a museum in 2002, following its use by the Theodor-Heuss-Archiv. A mid-1990s acquisition brought renovation by Stuttgart practice Behnisch & Partner. Its permanent exhibition, Democracy as a Way of Life, examines contributions by Heuss and Elly Heuss-Knapp to German democracy. Reconstructed living room, study and dining room connect political history with bourgeois life of the era. The museum also presents twentieth-century artworks, a garden, and educational programmes for schools and groups.

The 2023 reopening introduced new exhibitions about the Federal President’s role. A garden and twentieth-century artworks extend the museum beyond its reconstructed domestic rooms.
