St. Thomas is a painting by Italian artist Vittore Carpaccio, held in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in Germany. Its title identifies Thomas Aquinas, Saint Mark, and Saint Louis of Toulouse. Mark, Venice’s patron saint, sits at the centre, while Louis appears on the right as a bishop. Thomas Aquinas occupies the central seat within the painted group.

The saints belonged to different periods, so their meeting exists only within Carpaccio’s painted composition. The wealthy Dragan family commissioned the painting from Carpaccio. Their expertise centred on luxurious gilded crystal vessels, which shaped the work’s concealed history. Carpaccio first included bull’s-eye panes, then painted over them at the family’s request. Infrared examination later revealed those original panes beneath the visible surface. Giovan Battista Cima also influenced Carpaccio’s work during this period. The Staatsgalerie acquired the painting in 1852 through the Barbini Breganze collection from Venice.

Beneath the finished image, the hidden round panes preserve evidence of an altered commission. That detail links the painted scene to the Dragan family’s glassmaking practice.
