St. Laurentius stands in Stuttgart’s northern district of Freiberg as a church and community centre within the neighbourhood. Jörg Herkommer designed the complex in 1972 and 1973. Its modulated octagon brings the congregation into a semicircle around the centrally placed altar, while stepped levels rise towards the highest point above it. Light draws your attention upward and back to the altar.

A weekday and baptism chapel opens from the main entrance beside this central space. The adjoining community centre contains a large hall, a stage and a tea kitchen. The hall can divide into smaller spaces for different events and activities. Rooms below provide youth groups with meeting rooms, a workshop and a multipurpose room.

Three kindergarten group rooms connect with play areas and a garden designed by landscape architect Jürgen Seewald. Professor Rudolf Hagele designed the windows, and Wilhelm Derix’s glass workshops made them. The surrounding plan also responds to nearby architecture, including the Apollo high-rise, tying the complex to Freiberg’s urban setting.
