Schicksals-Brunnen stands in Stuttgart’s Upper Palace Garden, between the Opera and Schauspiel. Karl Donndorf created the Jugendstil fountain in 1914.

The semicircle places the goddess of fate at its centre, with outstretched arms and closed hands hiding human destiny. Two couples at either end embody joy and sorrow: a man holds the full bowl of life beneath a victory wreath, while another hides his head in a seated woman’s lap. The fountain originally commemorated German-Swiss opera singer Anna Sutter and stood beside the artists’ entrance to the Württemberg State Opera. Stuttgart moved it to the garden in 1963.

One detail links the work to Donndorf’s earlier Jünglingsbrunnen: the bowl of life appears there too, in a young man’s hand.
