Meta Oppenheimer is a Stolperstein in Stuttgart, set into the pavement as a place of remembrance. Its brass plate carries a person’s name and life dates on a ten-centimetre concrete cube.

The memorial belongs to a project initiated by German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992. Each stone marks the last freely chosen place where someone lived, worked or studied before Nazi persecution. Jewish victims form the majority, alongside Sinti and Roma, Poles, homosexual people, disabled people, Jehovah’s Witnesses and others. Handcrafted stones appear in everyday streets, where their small scale brings personal history into the surrounding neighbourhood.
