The Markthalle stands in Stuttgart city centre as a covered market hall for fresh produce and international specialities. Its broad, open interior has no supporting columns.

Shell limestone and artificial stone shape the façades, whose reliefs show fruit vases, animals, and market scenes. Murals and sculptures by Franz Heinrich Gref, Wilhelm Nida-Rümelin, Jakob Brüllmann, and Josef Zeitler enrich the hall.

Martin Elsässer designed the present reinforced-concrete hall after an earlier iron-and-glass market structure proved too small. Architect Georg von Morlok designed that earlier iron-and-glass structure.

A restored fountain marks one end of the hall. A damaged relief above the Ceres fountain remains visible inside.

At the eastern end, a narrow-gauge tram track recalls planned market wagon traffic. The track never joined Stuttgart’s public tram network.

War damage and a later fire led to restoration and interior renovation, while preservation efforts secured the building’s future. The building became a cultural monument of special significance.

Several restaurants and shops accompany the food stalls. Home décor, fashion, meats, and international specialities broaden the hall’s offer beyond traditional market shopping.
