Construction of the present church began in 1808 and finished in 1811, before Allied air raids largely destroyed it in 1944. Rebuilding produced a simplified modernist interior that reopened in 1955.

In 1978, the church became a co-cathedral of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Winfried Albiez’s 1982 organ contains 56 stops and 3,700 pipes. The Domchor, Domkapelle and Mädchenkantorei continue Stuttgart’s Catholic church-music tradition through education and performances.
