Altes Schloss stands on Stuttgart’s Schillerplatz as a Renaissance complex with a Gothic Dürnitzbau and an arcaded courtyard. Its origins reach back to 950, when a water castle protected the Marstall. Counts and later dukes of Württemberg used the residence for four centuries.

Christoph and Ludwig III reshaped it between 1553 and 1578, adding an equestrian staircase and a church. Fire and World War II caused damage, while Paul Schmitthenner led restoration in 1971. The Landesmuseum Württemberg presents Stone Age and Roman artefacts, paintings, and regional history within these historic rooms.

The courtyard displays early Italian Renaissance motifs and holds a monument to Eberhard I, first Duke of Württemberg. King Charles I and Olga lie buried beneath the castle church. Beside it, the late-eighteenth-century New Castle and a Karlsplatz museum about Claus von Stauffenberg extend the historical setting.
