Schloss Sommerhausen stands in Sommerhausen, a small wine village in Germany. From Hauptstraße, you see its façade above the historic centre’s roofs. An older two-wing section dates from the fifteenth century and meets the later main building. The principal structure bears the year 1569. A monumental three-storey gable dominates the view, with slender finial-like forms rising above it.

The castle remained associated for centuries with the Counts of Rechteren-Limpurg. Their ancestors held the hereditary imperial office of cupbearer at court. Emperor Ferdinand III stayed here during the upheavals of the Thirty Years’ War. Piccolomini’s troops plundered the property in 1634. The Rechteren-Limpurg-Speckfeld family reacquired it in 2016 and began gradual restoration.

Selected events use the rooms, but the building does not operate as a regular museum. The exterior still rewards close attention when the interior remains closed. Together with Sommerhausen’s town hall and church, the gable forms a memorable historic composition.
