# Sommerhausen Cemetery and Open-Air Pulpit

Friedhof Sommerhausen lies outside the former fortifications, where regular rubble-stone walls enclose its historic southern section. The northern extension belongs to a later period.

Established beyond the walls in 1607, the cemetery replaced a burial ground beside the parish church. An eastern gallery gives the site its distinctive structure.

Partly open and covered by a slate hipped roof, the wooden gallery shelters a stone pulpit beneath its central tower-like section. The upper cornice carries the date 1609.

Reliefs cover its six-sided body, showing the Last Judgment, angels with trumpets, Fides, and Spes. A carved human skull marks the lower shaft.

Coats of arms, names, and a surrounding inscription connect the monument with death, sacrifice, Christian faith, and hope. Historic memorials span the late sixteenth through twentieth centuries.

The former mortuary hall, built from rubble stone, also survives within this protected ensemble of walls, gallery, pulpit, graves, and remembrance. Together, these features record changing forms of burial and remembrance across generations.
