Happy Family of Five stands in the forecourt garden of Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Singapore. The forged copper sculpture shows five family members gathered in a shared form. Around it, gardens and city views create a calm setting beside the arts centre. Families and friends can use this open space as a meeting point during an Esplanade visit.

Chua Boon Kee created the work for the Esplanade’s tenth anniversary in 2012. The commission connects the five figures with ideas of family, harmony and community. Born in Singapore in 1953, Chua studied applied sculpture at Baharuddin Vocational Institute. His work also reflects his contribution to Singapore’s local art scene through several art societies.

Forged copper gives the sculpture a durable material presence in the garden. Five figures remain the clearest detail, holding the idea of togetherness in a public place.
