Puerta de Córdoba stands in Seville as an ancient city gate, facing the eastern route towards Córdoba. Its central arch once carried traffic towards Córdoba. Roman builders placed it within Seville’s defensive walls nearly two thousand years ago. Two smaller pedestrian arches once flanked the main opening, though unrest in the second century saw them filled in.

After Muslim rule reshaped Seville, Abd al-Rahman II rebuilt the Roman walls in the ninth century. Abbad I added new walls in the eleventh century. Under the Almoravids, Ali Ben Youssef expanded the defences and added a moat between 1125 and 1134. The gate later became a customs checkpoint, then received Renaissance, Baroque, and neoclassical changes.

Seville’s 1868 revolution brought rapid demolition, yet four gates survived by 1875, including this one. The western wall towards Puerta de la Macarena also remains. Restoration in 2000 uncovered a buried pedestrian arch, while the visitor centre opened in 2005. An eighteenth-century painting of the Virgin of Grace still hangs inside the main archway.
