Plaza de España curves through Maria Luisa Park in Seville, combining a monumental square with gardens, fountains, ponds, palms, and orange trees. Aníbal González designed its semicircular buildings in a regional style blending Renaissance, Baroque, Art Deco, and Neo-Mudéjar influences. A canal follows the buildings, and four bridges cross it between the square and its richly decorated galleries. The Vicente Traver fountain stands at the centre, beneath towers, arches, coats of arms, and carved royal details.

Colourful azulejos cover the architecture, while tiled alcoves represent Spain’s provinces through scenes from history, literature, and mythology. Covered bookshelves beside the alcoves create small exchanges for novels and books about the provinces. The surrounding buildings once presented Spanish industry and technology, and now accommodate government offices beside museums in Maria Luisa Park. You can row along the canal, trace the restored ceramic benches and lamps, or recognise the setting from Lawrence of Arabia and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.
