Castillo de San Jorge stands beneath Triana Market on Seville’s west bank of the Guadalquivir River. The underground ruins reveal a former medieval fortress. Panels identify rooms used by the Spanish Inquisition, which made this riverside stronghold its headquarters and prison.

Visigothic defences began the story, while Almohad rulers later anchored the floating Puente de barcas here. Ferdinand III broke its chains during Seville’s conquest. The Military Order of Saint George of Alfama then managed the castle before the Order of Montesa took over. Flooding damaged the building, and neglect eventually ended its defensive role.

The city demolished the fortress in the nineteenth century, and Triana Market rose above its archaeological remains. A museum now connects those stones with accounts of imprisonment, interrogation, and religious repression. Nearby, the Alley of the Inquisition follows part of the old fortifications between Castilla Street and Nuestra Señora de la O Walk.
