Villa Europa, also known as Villa Röchling, stands in Saarbrücken’s Rotenbühl district as a neobaroque building. Built in 1913, it was designed for banker Eduard Röchling by Karl Brugger and Rudolf Seifert. Its park-like grounds contain mature trees and a small coach house. The two-storey villa carries a mansard roof and a central projection on its front façade. A rounded rear bay window faces a large terrace beside the park. Stephan Balkenhol’s figures adorn the central gable, adding a later sculptural detail. The attached coach house accommodates the central office of the University of the Greater Region. A two-storey extension from the 1950s adds a garden-facing loggia and a basement level. Villa Europa became a children’s convalescent home after its transfer to Saarbrücken in 1927. It later served as an old people’s home before housing a Franco-German boarding school. Since 2006, the villa has housed the administration of the Franco-German University and two French institutes. Its architecture and institutional history connect Saarbrücken with educational exchange between Germany and France.
