The Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti rises in Italy from Piazza di Spagna to the church of Trinità dei Monti. Pale travertine covers its terraces and curving flights. Its concave and convex walls divide the slope into a theatrical composition, with paths that open, meet, and redirect your view. From above, the arrangement recalls a butterfly.

The steep, muddy hillside once made the connection difficult. An inheritance from French diplomat Étienne Gueffier funded the project, while Francesco De Sanctis shaped its final design. Construction began in 1723 and concluded between 1725 and 1726. Later restorations renewed the stonework after centuries of weather and footsteps.

At the foot, the Fontana della Barcaccia resembles a half-submerged boat. Pietro Bernini and Gian Lorenzo Bernini created the fountain. Above the terraces, the ancient Sallustiano Obelisk rises in a firm vertical line, contrasting with the staircase’s flowing curves.
