In Rheinfelden, the Ehemalige Johanniterkapelle preserves a Gothic former Roman Catholic chapel dating from around 1450. Its northward orientation faces the Rhine beside Rheinfelden’s old town. Plastered rubble stone forms the walls, while Upper Rhine red sandstone frames the pointed windows and tracery. A gilded cross of the order marks the southern gable. Inside, a choir wall, raised altar area, coloured sandstone sacrament house, and medieval sound pots reveal distinctive details. Several medieval sound pots remain visible in the altar house. Wall paintings cover the chapel, including a Last Judgment fresco from around 1500 attributed to a student of Martin Schongauer. The Last Judgment fresco dates from around 1500. A blocked doorway on the east façade once connected the chapel with the Johanniterkommende across the street. That covered passage disappeared from the building in 1820. Beneath the chapel, the Känzeli stands by the Rhine, with views towards the Messerturm and old Rhine bridge. The nearby Johanniterkommende remains privately owned in Rheinfelden. After the commandery dissolved in 1806, the restored chapel became an exhibition space for art and cultural events in 1996. Lectures, classical concerts, and exhibitions use the interior.
