St. Matthäus presents postwar architecture through a tent-shaped roof that shelters a church, community centre, kindergarten, and homes. Architect Adolf Abel designed the complex for a growing Protestant community. Inside, sliding walls change the sanctuary’s size, while a curved, column-free balcony follows the asymmetrical plan. Floor-to-ceiling coloured windows face south and fill the interior with morning light. Marble covers the altar, pulpit, and baptismal font, while brass and encaustic artworks add figurative detail. The brass pulpit work shows Matthew the Evangelist. Behind the altar, an encaustic mural presents the Sermon on the Mount in vivid colour. A 1955 organ provides music for the church. Its visible pipes reflect a technical innovation, while three bronze bells carry messages of peace and hope. The architectural ensemble remains largely unchanged in form. Solar power and a new heating system connect this historic building with energy-conscious design. Wheelchair accessibility is recorded among the spot’s facilities. The broad roof and flexible interior unite worship, community rooms, a kindergarten, and homes within one architectural gesture. St. Matthäus joins faith, art, music, and community under one roof.
