In Germany, Spitalkirche St. Katharinen surprises visitors with a central interior shaped by a rare hexagonal floor plan. The church stands within the historic St. Katharinenspital, where architecture and spiritual life meet. The central form replaces the rectangular layout expected in a church.

Built in 1287 as Heinrich Zant’s burial chapel, the central building preserves one of the oldest patrician mausoleums. Its High Gothic capitals carry individually carved, curling foliage. The surrounding foundation reaches back to the early thirteenth century and has joined faith with charity for centuries. The hospital, church, and supporting institutions form a complex nearly eight hundred years old.
