Niedermünster is a Romanesque church in Germany, built above Roman and early medieval foundations. Its walls preserve layers of Roman, Christian, and medieval history.

Roman military barracks once occupied the ground, followed by a Bavarian ducal residence and an early convent. The church became one of Bavaria’s oldest convents.

The early church grew into a significant burial place for Saint Erhard, Duke Henry the First, and Duchess Judith. Their tombs still anchor the church’s memory.

A medieval fire prompted a Romanesque rebuilding, while an ornate portal carries a later image of Mary. The church’s outer façade remains notably plain.

Inside, gray wall paintings, Baroque frames, and altars contrast with the nave’s Romanesque structure and light. The nave combines restraint with Baroque ornament.

Niedermünster has served as a duchesses’ convent and a parish church, while bells and music connect its past with daily life. The church is recorded as wheelchair accessible.
