The Kreuzhofkapelle is a Romanesque chapel of rough-hewn stone blocks, with a simple nave, round-arched windows and a calm apse. Its high windows reveal a former upper floor. That level served earthly needs, offering shelter to pilgrims, storage space, or refuge during troubled times. A narrow staircase once connected it through the west gable wall. The chapel probably arose in the middle of the twelfth century, on ground settled for millennia before its construction. Its best-known chapter involves Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the Babenbergers. Heinrich Jasomirgott and Heinrich the Lion met nearby to settle a dispute over Bavaria’s future. The gathering shaped the destiny of Austria. The Privilegium minus may have been sealed within these walls, linking the chapel with the formation of the Austrian duchy. Bombs damaged the building near the end of the Second World War. Georg Rauchenberger later secured the chapel’s survival through private restoration, and he rests beneath its interior floor. Sunlight reaches the apse around this place of shelter, politics and faith.
