Allerheiligenkapelle stands in a quiet German cloister, where its small, rounded Romanesque form draws the eye from the shadows. Built around the middle of the twelfth century, the chapel served as Bishop Hartwig II’s mausoleum. Its compact exterior conceals original paintings that connect stone, colour and sacred storytelling.

The wall paintings present the liturgy of All Saints through images, medallions and faded inscription bands. Above, an octagonal dome and drum place Christ among eight angels in a heavenly realm. Beneath them, portraits and symbolic objects evoke earthly power, while painted curtains cover the lower walls.

An angel in the eastern apse commands the winds to wait while God’s servants receive their mark. Two crowned women with halos fill the side apses, their oversized figures suggesting spiritual and worldly authority. Preservation keeps the interior closed to visitors, but these surviving colours still reveal a rare Romanesque world.
