Kalaja e Prizrenit stands on a strategic hill above Prizren’s old town in Kosovo. The Lumbardhi i Prizrenit flows below through the valley. Its recorded history reaches the Bronze Age, when Dardanian Illyrian tribes inhabited the surrounding region. The fortress overlooks the valley and surrounding mountains. Roman accounts mention Petrizen, while the site stood near the ancient Via Lissus–Naissus trade route. That route connected Lissus with Naissus. Several sources mention Theranda, but the relationship between that settlement and present-day Prizren remains uncertain.

Justinian I restored numerous fortresses in the Eastern Roman Empire during the sixth century. Later control passed through the Nemanjić dynasty and several feudal families before the Ottoman conquest. Ottoman rule shaped the fortress’s visible architecture. Visible walls and towers mostly reflect eighteenth-century Ottoman design, while excavations revealed storage rooms and living areas. Excavations also uncovered wall remains and towers. The fortress became a cultural monument of exceptional importance in Kosovo. Its recorded layers bring Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, medieval, and Ottoman histories together on one hill.
