Voltaireterrasse sits beside Babelsberg Castle in Potsdam, within Babelsberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Steps lead from the terrace towards St. Michael’s Monument. Guardian statues stand beside the steps, while surrounding terraces connect the castle with flower-filled pleasure grounds. Fountains, lakes, and waterfalls shape the wider park.

Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau influenced the park’s landscape and proposed these terraces as a later addition to the castle. Restoration returned vases, spires, water spouts, and animal sculptures to the grounds. Red and yellow sandstone form St. Michael’s Monument, whose fountain carries the dragon-slaying Archangel Michael. August Kiss created the sandstone monument between 1802 and 1865.

The monument recalls Prince Wilhelm of Prussia’s role in suppressing the bourgeois revolution of 1848 and 1849. Wilhelm became known as the “buckshot prince” after using grapeshot-loaded cannons in Baden.
