Villa Tauber stands in Potsdam’s Babelsberg district as an architectural structure built in 1910. Its history includes a residence, a political administration, and a film library.

Richard Tauber, the Austrian tenor, once lived there while working on films in the area. His Jewish heritage forced him to leave Germany in 1933.

During the Nazi regime, the building housed the NSDAP district administration, which added a bunker later used as a wine cellar. From 1976, its rooms held the library of the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen Konrad Wolf.

The left gatehouse also contained a small shop during the villa’s film-school period. A private owner acquired Villa Tauber in 2005.

Restoration returned the villa to its original state by 2008 and removed additions from the film-school period. The partly protected garden follows a design reconstructed from historical evidence.

American wartime aerial photographs and a film document guided the garden’s reconstruction. The property also appears in Die schwarze Rose, a film featuring Lilian Harvey.
