Schloss Sanssouci stands in Potsdam, near Berlin, as a palace built for Frederick the Great’s summer residence. Frederick the Great planned it as a private summer retreat. The French name Sanssouci means without worries and reflects its distance from court formalities. Its single-storey Rococo form rests above terraced gardens. Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff designed the palace, while Jan Bouman later completed the project. The surrounding park contains temples and follies. Together, the terraces, gardens and buildings express a pre-Romantic ideal of harmony between people and nature. The garden front displays carved atlantes and caryatids. At the centre, a dome rises above the central bow, while side wings frame the palace. The northern façade uses restrained Corinthian columns. Frederick’s influence helped define the style known as Frederician Rococo. Later, Frederick William IV commissioned Ludwig Persius to restore and enlarge the palace. Ferdinand von Arnim also improved the surrounding grounds. After Frederick’s death, the interior was remodelled in a neoclassical style. Sanssouci and its gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The New Palace in the park presents a contrasting expression of Frederick’s power and strength.
