Schloss Babelsberg stands in Babelsberg Park, Potsdam, within the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its English Gothic Revival architecture gives the palace a distinctive silhouette among the park’s terraces and water features. Prince William and Augusta used the palace as their summer residence before his accession as German Emperor William I.

Karl Friedrich Schinkel began the construction in 1833, shaping its first design around the English Gothic Revival style. Ludwig Persius and Johann Heinrich Strack continued the work after Schinkel’s death in 1841. They completed the palace in two phases by 1849, expanding it after William became heir to the Prussian throne in 1840. The building later witnessed a decisive conversation between William I and Otto von Bismarck on 22 September 1862. That discussion preceded Bismarck’s appointment as Prussian Minister President and Foreign Minister.

Peter Joseph Lenné and Hermann von Pückler-Muskau shaped the surrounding park as an English landscape garden. Its terraces create the impression of castle rooms beneath the open sky, while restored water features frame the palace. The contrast between Gothic forms, open terraces and water makes Babelsberg a memorable Potsdam landmark.
