Portierhaus stands at the entrance to the Dutch establishment in Potsdam’s New Garden, beside the park’s main avenue. Red-brick bell and stepped gables give the late eighteenth-century complex its Dutch character.

Built from 1789 as an auxiliary settlement for the Marble Palace, the gatehouse contained four guard pavilions. Four service houses, two stables and a carriage house followed the avenue, while the Cavalier and Ladies’ House welcomed noble companions and distinguished guests. An orangery and tulip meadow completed the grounds, although a planned church tower was never built. The arrangement served practical court needs as well as providing a picturesque setting for garden celebrations.

Court life later brought expanded attics, a large riding hall and red-brick garages for the crown prince’s automobiles. From 1945 to 1952, Soviet Cultural Park commandants occupied the service houses, while a poster of the Moscow Kremlin hung above the ticket office here. The former riding hall housed Potsdam Planetarium from 1968 until 2007.
