Platz der Einheit forms a large rectangular square in Potsdam, shaped by water, royal planning, transport, and rebuilding. The site was once the Faule See.

After the lake was filled, residential buildings gradually developed around the former water area under Frederick William I. Its earlier name, Wilhelmplatz, recalled Frederick William II.

Landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné later introduced rows of trees and diagonal paths across the square. A bronze statue once stood at its centre.

Its restored layout combines broad lawns and classical and modern buildings, including the neobaroque post office and civic library. The Wilhelmgalerie occupies the square’s northern side.

The square received its present name after the Second World War and remains a tram hub. Potsdam’s tram lines meet at this square.

Its transport role began with horse-drawn trams and continued through the development of electric tram services. The square remains part of Potsdam’s urban landscape.
