Normannischer Turm stands on Ruinenberg in Potsdam as an architectural landmark with a medieval watchtower form. Ludwig Persius designed the tower in 1846. The structure rises about twenty-three metres above the surrounding site. It has several floors beneath a walkable roof ringed by battlements. From the roof, the panorama extends from Pfaueninsel across Park Sanssouci to Werder. Ruinenberg also preserves a designed landscape around a historic water basin. Frederick the Great commissioned the basin to supply the fountains of Park Sanssouci in the mid-eighteenth century. Colossal columns, a Doric round temple, a pyramid, and a ruin wall shaped the setting around the water. Trees formed a natural backdrop for this early continental landscape arrangement influenced by English styles. Peter Joseph Lenné later expanded Park Sanssouci around Ruinenberg and the fields of the Bornstedt estate. The tower became part of this landscape under King Frederick William the Fourth. Its medieval appearance, roof battlements, and broad view connect architecture with Potsdam’s garden history.
