Jägertor is a Baroque city gate in Potsdam, built in 1733 during the reign of Prussian King Frederick William I. It marked the northern edge of the city’s second Baroque expansion. An avenue laid out in 1668 led from the gate towards the Jägerhof, a hunting lodge beside a former pheasantry. A sculptural hunting scene adorns the gate, showing dogs attacking a deer. The artist and architect remain unknown, while the gate’s name recalls its route towards the Jägerhof and its hunting grounds. Potsdam’s former city walls disappeared in 1869, leaving Jägertor freestanding. The gate forms part of a nineteenth-century promenade that follows the line of those lost walls. The customs and guard buildings beside it were dismantled in 1907. The city of Potsdam funded a complete restoration in 2013. Recorded access information marks Jägertor as wheelchair accessible. Its freestanding form presents the gate as both an architectural work and a surviving trace of Potsdam’s former boundary.
