Friedrichskirche stands on Weberplatz in Babelsberg, a district of Potsdam in Brandenburg. The church remains a visible architectural landmark in Babelsberg. Frederick the Great commissioned the church for Bohemian Lutheran exiles who settled in Nowawes during the eighteenth century. The Dutch architect Jan Bouman designed Friedrichskirche in Potsdam. The building forms a simple hall church with an elongated octagonal plan and a western tower. Its western tower carries a slate-covered octagonal spire. Inside, the pulpit stands at the height of the lower gallery, bearing Frederick the Great’s insignia. The painter Max Kutschmann painted the interior. A larger sacristy and gallery stair towers belong to later renovations, while restoration followed damage during the Second World War. The present organ comes from Alexander Schuke Potsdam Orgelbau. It uses manuals and a pedal, while a smaller positive organ stands in the choir. The choir organ is a smaller positive instrument. Friedrichskirche hosts services, concerts and cultural events within Babelsberg’s diverse community. Its architecture and furnishings connect Potsdam with Bohemian exile, Lutheran migration and Prussian history.
