The Communs, also known as Haus 9, form part of the Neues Palais complex at Sanssouci Park's western end in Potsdam. Haus 9 served as the kitchen building for the palace. Built between 1766 and 1769, the Communs provided practical spaces supporting the Neues Palais and its princely guests. The northern Haus 11 accommodated palace staff and court cavaliers. It also housed the entourages of princely guests residing at the Neues Palais, while Haus 9 handled the palace kitchens. The complex belongs to Potsdam's Prussian Baroque heritage. The Neues Palais rose from 1763 to 1769 after nearly a decade of planning delayed by the Seven Years' War. Frederick II shaped the palace's planning and construction. Designed as a guest palace, the Neues Palais stands as a major architectural landmark within Potsdam's Sanssouci Park. The southern Commun contained the Neues Palais kitchens. The Neues Palais is recognised as Potsdam's largest palace and the last major palace built in the Prussian Baroque style.
