In Potsdam, the Brandenburger Tor stands as a triumphal arch at the western end of Brandenburger Straße. The gate was built between 1770 and 1771.

Carl von Gontard and Georg Christian Unger designed it for Frederick II of Prussia after Seven Years’ War victories. Its two long sides present different architectural treatments.

The city-facing side uses pilasters and trophies, while the countryside-facing side brings projecting Corinthian columns and decorative sculptures. The richer side recalls Rome’s Arch of Constantine.

Roman influence also appears in the Corinthian double columns and the design of the attic above the passage. The gate originally formed part of Potsdam’s city wall.

It served as a toll barrier and helped prevent desertion and smuggling before the wall disappeared around 1900. Pedestrian entrances were added in 1843.

The freestanding gate marks the entrance to the city-centre pedestrian zone and leads directly to the Church of Peter and Paul. Its name reflects the historic route towards Brandenburg.
