Alte Wache stands at the corner of Lindenstraße and Charlottenstraße in Potsdam. Built between 1795 and 1797, it represents early classical architecture under Andreas Ludwig Krüger. It began as Potsdam’s main guardhouse. King Friedrich Wilhelm II presented the building to his former regiment, Prinz von Preußen. Its original rooms included a guardroom, an upper-floor assembly chamber, and butcher stalls. Plastered arcades define both of its principal facades. Paired Tuscan columns support the arcades, an uncommon feature in Potsdam during that period. A low sandstone parapet crowns the cornice. Diamond reliefs interrupt the parapet beside pedestals carrying military trophies. Sculptors Johann Christoph and Michael Christoph Wohler created the sandstone decoration. Their work includes statues and figure groups across the two main facades. On Charlottenstraße, Mars reaches for his sword. On Lindenstraße, Minerva stands beside trophies on a pedestal spanning two architectural axes. These details place military imagery directly within the building’s classical design.
